Friday fact #18: The first black woman to travel in space

Mae Carol Jemison, born October 17 1956, is an American engineer and physician.

In 1987 her application to become an astronaut was accepted by NASA, she became one of the 15 candidates selected out of more than 2,000 people.

She became the first black woman to travel in space when she served as an astronaut aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour.
