Friday fact #28: The first African American to receive the Pulitzer

Gwendolyn Elizabeth Brooks was an American poet, author, and teacher.

Brooks graduated from Wilson Junior College in Chicago in 1936. Her first published collection was ‘A Street in Bronzeville (1945)’.

She was the first African American poet to win the Pulitzer Prize (1950), and in 1968 she was named the poet laureate of Illinois, a position she held until her death.
