John “Jack” Broughton was an English bare-knuckle boxer. Third heavyweight boxing champion of England.
He is the formulator of the first set of boxing rules, and inventor of mufflers, the precursors of modern boxing gloves. Prior to this, the “rules” that existed were very loosely defined and tended to vary from contest to contest.
Broughton gained recognition as champion at an uncertain date after defeating Tom Pipes.
